Dawn · Senhora do Monte and Graça
The highest in the city, in the Graça neighbourhood, is also the quietest early on. At dawn you have the whole of Lisbon to yourself, with the Tagus mist lifting and almost no one around. Drop down afterwards to the Miradouro da Graça for a coffee: at that hour the kiosk belongs to the locals.
Afternoon · Portas do Sol and Santa Luzia
In Alfama, these twin viewpoints face the river over the old town's rooftops. They work best in the mid-afternoon, when the low sun picks out the domes and the tiles of Santa Luzia catch colour. It's an unavoidable stop on the way down from the Castle of São Jorge.
Sunset · São Pedro de Alcântara and Santa Catarina
For dusk, cross over to Bairro Alto. São Pedro de Alcântara faces the castle and glows orange; Santa Catarina, more rebellious, fills with young people nursing a beer as the sun drops over the 25 de Abril bridge. Arrive with time to spare: the good railing spots vanish fast.
